Applying

to the Human Factors and Ergomonics Graduate Minor Program

Who may apply?
Any graduate student at the University of Minnesota who is:

  • Admitted as a Masters or PhD candidate in any graduate program in any department at the University of Minnesota. We will refer to this as the student’s “home department,”
  • In good standing in his or her home department.

When should I apply?
Students may apply at any time of the year. PhD students must apply before taking their preliminary oral exams.

How may I apply?
Students can apply to the Human Factors and Ergonomics minor program by filling out their Degree Program Form according to the instructions below and the instructions of your department. The Degree Program Form (pdf)is a form on which you list the courses that you plan to take for completion of your degree. The requirements for both your major and minor program should be listed on this form. If you have already submitted a degree program form but wish to add a Human Factors and Ergonomics minor then you can file a petition form (pdf) to add the minor. We regret that PhD students who have already taken their preliminary oral exam cannot add new minor programs.

Application procedure:

1. Review the list of Human Factors Relevant courses and develop a plan of study that meets the Human Factors and Ergonomics program requirements,

2. Review the list of statistical courses that fulfill graduation prerequisites for the minor program. If these courses are not already part of your major program requirements, include them on your Degree Program Form as electives. If you have already taken similar courses at another university, please bring a copy of the syllabi for these courses when you meet with the Human Factors Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).

3. Contact the Human Factors and Ergonomics DGS to review and discuss the human factors aspects of your degree program. The DGS will work with you and your thesis advisor to identify courses that best support your thesis work, and may propose alternate courses.

4. Obtain approval signatures from the Human Factors DGS and the appropriate people in your home department (your advisor or home department DGS).

5. Submit your degree Program Form according to the instructions given by your home department. Each department’s instructions may vary.
